Competition
The Energy Act that established the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority in 2005 included a commitment to compete the work carried out at the sites it inherited from UKAEA and BNFL.
The NDA has created site licence companies that manage the sites on its behalf. NDA are running competitions for the parent body organisations of each of these companies.
Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd is the site licence company for Dounreay. It is the only body licensed and authorised by regulators to carry out work at the site. DSRL implements the lifetime plan for the closure of the site and manages a number of contractors carrying out the work.
The NDA launched its competition process for Dounreay, with the aim of letting a contract for its parent body organisation. Currently, the parent body organisation is UKAEA Ltd, which was acquired from the UK Government by the Babcock International Group.
The successful bidder will acquire Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd and occupy a small number of key positions in its management.
Two consortia competed for DSRL - Caithness Solutions and Babcock Dounreay Partnership.
The NDA announced a preferred bidder, Babcock Dounreay Partnership, on November 23, 2011. The next stage is a transition period, with share transfer expected to take place on April 2, 2012.
