Dounreay is reviewing its disposal routes for all wastes to establish if its practices continue to represent the best practicable environmental options. Click here for details of the waste options review.
The site is seeking views on the relative importance of the assessment criteria.
The last study covering the entire site was carried out in 2003 in support of the Dounreay Site Restoration Plan. The new study is being carried out to optimise the site waste management strategy for gaseous, liquid and solid waste streams, based on the latest information on best practice and information from previous consultations which were carried out on individual waste streams.
The new study is a requirement of the regulatory authorisations granted under the Radioactive Substances Act 1993 for the disposal of radioactive waste from Dounreay. It is due to be submitted to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency by June 27, 2009.
A workshop was held in November 2008 over a two-day period. The first day reviewed the national and international best practice on waste minimisation and identified a number of waste streams where there was scope for further assessment or consideration of the waste strategy. Click here to read report.
The second day covered the assessment of the management options for the selected waste streams. Otions which did not meet the minimum criteria or were not considered feasible were screened out. The short-listed options were scored against 14 sub-attributes under the categories of health and safety, environmental impacts, financial, socio-economic and technical.
The next step was a sensitivity analysis on the scored options by prioritising the assessment criteria. The public was invited to contribute to this study by providing views on the relative importance of the assessment criteria. Click here to view the responses. In addition, Shetland Islands Council made a separate submission. Click here to read Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd's response to Shetland Islands Council.
The project team is updating the draft BPEO document to take account of these responses.
A review of national and international best practice on waste minimisation has been undertaken and is at an advanced draft stage.
A strategy document is being prepared for BPEO implementation.
These documents are requirements of the authorisation granted by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency. The deadline for completion is June 27, 2009.
