BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Stephen White - Chairman
Stephen White joined UKAEA in 1975. He has held posts in Personnel Management, Finance, Planning, Strategy and Property Management and has been Head of Site at Harwell and Culham. He led for UKAEA in the Government’s 2000/01 Quinquennial Review of UKAEA and, as Director of Business Improvement, led the major change programme in anticipation of the NDA.
Stephen White was appointed UKAEA Secretary and Director of Business Strategy in April 2003. He is currently the Programme Director for the project to create the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus Joint Venture.
Simon Middlemas - Managing Director
Simon Middlemas spent much of his career in the Royal Navy, working around the country in all Naval bases and serving on the nuclear submarines HMS RENOWN, HMS SPARTAN and HMS SOVEREIGN. With various other appointments including 3 years with Rolls-Royce in Derby, he first came to Caithness in 1999 take up the post of Naval Superintendent at the Naval Reactor Test Establishment at Vulcan, followed by 2 years refitting and refuelling nuclear submarines in Plymouth. He has a degree in electrical engineering and professional qualifications in marine and nuclear engineering.
He was appointed Director of Dounreay in February 2007, having been acting Director since August 2006 and, prior to that, Deputy Director. He joined Dounreay in July 2004 as head of New Build projects.
Philip Colville - Company Secretary and Director of Finance
Philip Colville graduated in civil engineering before training as a chartered accountant with Thomson McLintock & Co (now part of KPMG), spending time in their London, Edinburgh and New Zealand offices. He worked with a number of companies in Scotland before spending a year at the London Business School on the Sloan Fellowship Masters course.
In 1991 he entered the public sector working for the NHS, latterly as director of finance and information at Dundee Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He joined the Highways Agency in England before moving to UKAEA as head of finance at Dounreay in September 2005.
Charles Curtis - non-executive Director
Charles Curtis read Chemistry and Geochemistry at Imperial College and the University of Sheffield before a career in university teaching and research, latterly as Research Dean for the Faculty of Science and Engineering in Manchester. He was a member of the Royal Society Working Group, reporting on the Nirex Programme in 1994, and was chairman of RWMAC from 2000 until 2005.
Charles Curtis is presently Emeritus Professor of Geochemistry in the University of Manchester and Head of R&D Strategy for the Radioactive Waste Management Directorate of the NDA (formerly UK Nirex Ltd).
Leslie Mitchell - non-executive Director
Leslie Mitchell is a mechanical engineer and a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering. During his career in power generation, he was the Director of Business Planning for Nuclear Electric. He was responsible for establishing the internal audit function in Nuclear Electric, changing the role from one of pure financial audit to audit of the business risks. He later returned to his technical roots as Director of Technology, first for Nuclear Electric and later Magnox Electric.
Leslie Mitchell acts as an independent consultant to UKAEA on nuclear safety, sitting on Nuclear Safety Committees and the Board Assurance Committee.
Tony Wratten - Director of Assurance
Tony Wratten graduated in chemical engineering. After leaving university he worked on the design and commissioning of a range of new plant for the steel and chemical industry.
He started working at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston in 1984. In 1991 he transferred to the Department of Energy in London and joined UKAEA at Harwell in 1993 to head the Research, Development and Strategy Department. He moved to Dounreay on a permanent basis in 1998 as the manager of the newly formed Waste Management Group, later becoming Head of Decommissioning. In 2006 he took over as Head of Assurance.
