Information for visitors

The site is closed to members of the public for safety and security reasons while it is decommissioned.

There is a public viewing area nearby, with car parking and interpretative panels.

Dounreay operates a public information centre in the nearby town of Thurso.

This office is staffed by Dounreay’s community relations team. It is open from 9am until 5pm, Monday to Friday (excluding site holidays). The office displays information, exhibits and video about the site closure programme and sells gifts such as history books about the site.

An exhibition about the history of the site is a feature of Caithness Horizons in the centre of Thurso. This is a free visitor centre that incorporates the town’s museum. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10am until 6pm and from 11am until 4pm on Sundays.

A visitor guide to Dounreay has been produced by DSRL.
