Simon Middlemas – Managing Director
Simon Middlemas spent much of his career in the Royal Navy, working around the country in all Naval bases and serving on the nuclear submarines HMS RENOWN, HMS SPARTAN and HMS SOVEREIGN. With various other appointments including 3 years with Rolls-Royce in Derby, he first came to Caithness in 1999 take up the post of Naval Superintendent at the Naval Reactor Test Establishment at Vulcan, followed by 2 years refitting and refuelling nuclear submarines in Plymouth. He has a degree in electrical engineering and professional qualifications in marine and nuclear engineering.
Simon was appointed Director of Dounreay in February 2007, having been acting Director since August 2006 and, prior to that, Deputy Director. He joined Dounreay in July 2004 as head of New Build projects.
Simon is married to Judith and they have two children. He is the vice president of the Royal British Legion, a fund-raiser for the RNLI, member of the Rotary Club of Thurso and is on the Scrabster Harbour Board of Management. Other interests include skiing, walking, golf, motor-homes and model railways.
Tony Wratten – Director of Assurance
Tony Wratten graduated from the University of Bradford with a degree in chemical engineering. After leaving university he worked on the design and commissioning of a range of new plant for the steel and chemical industry.
Tony started working at the Atomic Weapons Establishment at Aldermaston in 1984. In 1991 he transferred to the Department of Energy in London and joined UKAEA at Harwell in 1993 to head the Research, Development and Strategy Department. He moved to Dounreay on a permanent basis in 1998 as the manager of the newly formed Waste Management Group, later becoming Head of Decommissioning. In 2006 he took over as Head of Assurance.
Tony is married to Cathy and has two teenage children. Outside of work he serves as an Officer in the RAF reserve and in this capacity helps to run the Thurso Air Training Corps squadron. He enjoys anything to do with aviation and is a keen traveller.
Brad Smith – Site Project Manager
Brad Smith’s career in commercial nuclear facilities started in the USA in 1981. Brad holds a Bachelor of Science degree in applied mathematics and completed post-graduate work in Environmental Sciences & Engineering. He held several high-profile management positions with the Rocky Flats closure project, becoming deputy vice-president and then operations and decommissioning manager.
Brad moved to the Hanford site in 2001 to work with CH2MHILL Hanford Group's tank farms as their operations and decommissioning manager, then director of nuclear safety and licensing, culminating as deputy vice-president of waste feed operations. In 2005, Brad was placed as the Hanford River corridor closure site project decommissioning manager. He was seconded by CH2MHILL to Dounreay in July 2006, and is currently site project manager, responsible for all aspects of site operations, decommissioning, waste management and environmental restoration.
Brad is married to Teresa and has one daughter and one step-son. He enjoys walking the family dog, golf, skiing and travelling.
Philip Colville – Company Secretary and Director of Finance
Philip Colville graduated in civil engineering before training as a chartered accountant with Thomson McLintock & Co (now part of KPMG), spending time in their London, Edinburgh and New Zealand offices. He worked with a number of companies in Scotland before spending a year at the London Business School on the Sloan Fellowship Masters course.
In 1991 he entered the public sector working for the NHS, latterly as director of finance and information at Dundee Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. He joined the Highways Agency in England before moving to UKAEA as head of finance at Dounreay in September 2005.
Philip is married to Felicity and has two sons. His interests include golf and the Proms.
Jerry Abbott – Head of Human Resources
Jerry Abbott graduated from Stirling University with a degree in psychology before embarking on his career in Human Resources with a car components manufacturer in the West Midlands in the early 1970's.
He broadened his career in food manufacturing during the 1980s, and spent a period in retail in the 1990s before joining AMEC in 1997, where he was a Divisional Head of HR within the UK business of AMEC Group Ltd. He was seconded to Dounreay by AMEC in 2006 as Head of Human Resources. He has recently been appointed to the Board of the National Skills Academy - Nuclear and is Chair of the development in Scotland.
Jerry is married to Helen and they have two grown up children. In his earlier days he was a keen sportsman and maintains this interest through golf. Another pastime is DIY and he has completed some major renovation and refurbishment projects at home.
Doug Shanks – Director’s Support Manager
Doug Shanks is a mechanical engineering with a background in providing high technology engineering and project management support to nuclear projects. He worked with Babcock Power, before joining Dounreay over 20 years ago.
Doug has worked on technical and safety-related posts at the Prototype Fast Reactor, held various departmental and project management roles, and latterly was senior project manager for the site reorganisation and transition to site licence company. As head of the director’s support office, he is responsible for business improvement, socio-economic support and communications.
Doug is married to Aileen and has three children. In his spare time, he enjoys DIY, fly-fishing and walking the dog.
Andy Malkin - Head of Programme Management
Andy is a chartered mechanical engineer with a varied background in the oil and gas, major construction, defence and infrastructure sectors of industry.
Beginning his career in the oil and gas industry, he broadened his programme management experience in 1999 with defence contractor BAE Systems. He also worked as a programme director for Carillion Infrastructure Services on the Edinburgh tram project, before re-joining AMEC Nuclear in 2007. He was seconded to Dounreay in 2008 as Head of Programme Management, and looks forward to the challenges ahead.
Andy is married to Lesley and they have one son, aged 7. Outside work, Andy’s interests include golf, motorcycle trials, house restoration, squash and playing football.
Tom Cummings - Head of Commercial
Tom, a commercial director with 22 years of experience in the engineering and construction industries, joined DSRL in May 2008, seconded from AMEC.
He is experienced in the delivery of support services in a number of market sectors including nuclear, oil and gas, airports, power generation and defence in both the UK and international markets. He is familiar in the implementation of alternative contracting strategies for major projects, including partnering, joint venturing, alliancing and incentivised contracting.
Coatbridge-born Tom’s c.v. includes supporting AMEC in its diversification from heavy engineering into airports in the mid 1990s.
He supported AMEC’s downstream oil and das division in its entry to new markets, including China, with the award of the programme management contract for the US$2 billion SECCO ethylene cracker complex in Caojing near Shanghai and the award of the Kuwaiti National Oil Company’s five-year project management contract for the design and management of a US$11 billion programme.
Tom was a member of the team that successfully negotiated and set up the business alliance of UKAEA, AMEC and CH2MHill alliance to pursue selected NDA tier 1 contracts. Before joining DSRL Tom was assigned to the UKAEA’s Harwell and Winfrith division as commercial director.
