Export

All the breeder material at Dounreay will be "recanned".

This involves placing the pucks in new sleeves that meet the specification for the reprocessing plant.

Once this has been done, the breeder is ready to be exported.

A new export facility has been built in the same building where the outer breeder will be processed once it is removed from the reactor.

This is where the recanned material will be loaded into drums and each drum placed inside a strong transport container known as a flask.

Each flask is designed to protect the contents in the event of an accident during transport.

The material will be transported to Sellafield for reprocessing by DRS, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

More information about transport can be found in our Nuclear Fuel section.
