D1111 heat exchange

The demolition in 2003 of D1111 was the most significant change to have been made to the skyline of Dounreay.

The four-storey heat exchange building was a prominent facility adjacent to the Dounreay Fast Reactor.

Heat from the reactor was transferred to D1111 via a pipe bridge where it was used to generate steam.

In 2003, it was demolished to clear the ground for the construction of the breeder removal building.

Interserve and Edmund-Nuttall carried out the work, supported by sub-contractors Controlled Demolition, Gunn, Simpson and Speedy Skip Hire.

Panels were removed from the building before "nibblers" started to dismantle the steel frame.

An estimated 300 tonnes of steel was sent for recycling.
