Starting Salary: £34K to 58K per annum (DoE)

For more than 50 years, as the home of the UK’s fast reactor research and development programme, the name Dounreay has been associated with excellence in all areas of engineering and project management.  Now Dounreay is making a name for itself as the centre of excellence for nuclear decommissioning.  As the European reference site for nuclear decommissioning, Dounreay offers a unique opportunity to be involved in some of the UK’s most challenging technical projects.

Be part of it:

A number of vacancies have arisen for Health Physicists and Senior Health Physicists to support the on-going programme of decommissioning work at Dounreay. The Job Holders will be responsible for providing site project teams with relevant and timely radiological protection advice, information and support, in line with good practice and legal requirements.

Main responsibilities:

  • Provide advice and guidance to the Dounreay site on the implementation of radiation protection management processes and standards
  • Assist Health Physics Surveyor competence assessment
  • Provide specialist radiation protection training
  • Contribute to maintenance of Health Physics standards
  • Assist the site audit programme.  Undertake local audit and inspection to ensure compliance with DSRL management systems and IRRs
  • Assist in delivering specified tasks from  the Chief Nuclear Officer  improvement plan
  • Provide emergency support to emergency arrangements
  • Provide technical support to RADSAFE and site on a rota basis
  • Be a DSRL accredited Health Physicist
  • Assist the implementation of emerging topics as defined by the Radiation Protection Manager

In addition, as Senior Health Physicist:

  • Undertake Health physics competence assessment
  • Contribute to the development of specialist Radiation Protection training
  • Support the maintenance of DSRL  codes of practice, standards  and guidance
  • Participate in the site audit programme as a specialist advisor.
  • Assist in the development of site emergency procedures and contingency arrangements
  • Interface with stakeholders, including Regulators and auditors on radiation protection issues
  • Represent DSRL at internal forums
  • Supervision and supporting Health Physicists and trainees
  • Provide Health Physicist cover to site on a rota basis
  • Be an appointed RPA
  • Be appointed to RWA Corporate Body

The successful candidates will be appointed to positions appropriate to their skills, qualifications and experience.

Desirable skills, aptitudes and experience:

  • Qualified to Degree level in Science or equivalent qualification and experience
  • Have a minimum of two years Health Physics experience.
  • Have excellent interpersonal skills for dealing with a wide range of Dounreay and external contactor personnel, along with good organisational and IT skills
  • Able to demonstrate good organisational and planning skills
  • Have a positive approach, be self-motivated, assertive and possess the ability to use initiative

In addition, as Senior Health Physicist:

  • Hold a valid Certificate of Competence to be a Radiation Protection Adviser
  • Have a minimum of five years Health Physics experience.
