A highly-skilled and professional workforce, making every £ work harder to reduce the hazard faster

Dismantling the old D1204 reprocessing plant

Dounreay today paints the most vivid picture yet of how the site will look once decommissioning is complete in 2025.

The site’s latest monthly performance report shows how the proposed low-level waste disposal facility forms a key part of the strategy for managing all the radioactive waste from the site closure programme.

By 2025, all the low-level waste should have been cleared from the site and deposited in a series of underground vaults, with the more hazardous intermediate-level wastes, fuels and nuclear materials retained in secure above-ground stores.

Also published today is the latest edition of the monthly newspaper Dounreay News. It includes reports on World Environment Day, the national Learning at Work Day, a look back in time at apprenticeships and a guest column by Observer science editor Robin McKie.
