Plasma-arc cuts through old fuel plant
January 29, 2009
Dounreay's latest monthly performance report is now available.
The four-page report for December features pioneering work to cut up and dismantle an old plant using plasma-arc cutting techniques. The facility once examined material that had been burned in a reactor, so the cutting equipment is being operated remotely to protect workers from radiation.
"During inactive trials of the plasma-arc cutters, we found it could slice through the thick steel plates much faster than conventional cutting tools," says project manager Gordon Tait.
