Film goes underground at Dounreay

Gunn is among the local contractors working on the new drain

A £500,000 project to lay a new pipeline for radioactive effluent from the decommissioning of Dounreay is the subject of a new film.

Going Underground at Dounreay reveals some of the challenges faced by project managers when digging areas of the site previously occupied by research facilities.

The four-minute film features the work of a team laying a new 300-metre section of the site's low-active drain.

The existing drain runs below the site proposed for major new construction work to retrieve waste from two underground facilities - the shaft and silo.

"Before we can remove the old low-active drain, we need to put in a new low-active drain," says George Groat, the engineer in charge of the project at DSRL.

The film features work being carried out by a number of local contractors, including Gunn, Gow and Budge Formwork.
