Dounreay responds to Japan aid request
March 31, 2011
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority is making available radiological measurement and protection equipment from its sites in the UK, including Dounreay, to assist the Japanese authorities at Fukushima.
The NDA was approached by the Department of Energy and Climate Change after the Japanese Embassy asked for assistance with the supply of specialist equipment.
Sellafield Sites Ltd co-ordinated the collection of available stock from UK sites on behalf of the NDA.
The company approached DSRL with a list of equipment.
A van transported respirators, hand-held radiation survey equipment, personal dosimeters, dust masks and Tyvek suits from Dounreay to Sellafield. Together with stock from other sites, it was packaged up as air freight and sent to Japan.
DSRL continues to retain sufficient stocks to meet its own equipment requirements and the site’s emergency response capability.
