DSRL suspends haulier
November 18, 2011
DSRL suspended a haulage company from its list of approved contractors following the arrest of one of its drivers for driving while banned.
The driver was coming to Dounreay to collect a small load of low-hazard sources when he was stopped by the police and subsequently arrested and charged.
The sources, which are used routinely in industrial measuring equipment, were securely packed into drums. The total radioactivity of the sources was less than the radioactivity of a single smoke detector.
DSRL took immediate action to remove the company from its approved vendor list.
Haulage contractors are used routinely in the UK to transport radioactive sources to and from industrial, medical and research premises.
More stringent regulations apply to the transport of higher hazard materials such as nuclear fuel and waste.
