Land

In August 2009, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd carried out a survey of fields adjacent to the site that are earmarked for development as a low-level waste disposal facility.

This area was zoned previously in the 1980s for the construction of the European Demonstration Reprocessing Plant but this project did not proceed.

During the survey, a "minor" particle of DFR origin and an area of radioactive contamination were detected in the soil. This was announced on August 19.

DSRL presented the findings of its investigation to regulators, the land-user, nearby residents and members of Dounreay Stakeholder Group's environment sub-committee, and published the report on September 16, 2009.
