Job Title: Radiation Measurement and Metrology Engineer
Department: Engineering Assurance, Assurance Services Unit
Reporting To: Maintenance Authority Assurance Team Leader
Salary Range: Up to £44,436 per annum
JOB PURPOSE
As part of the site restoration programme at Dounreay, site personnel use a wide range of equipment for the detection and measurement of radiation and radioactivity. This equipment needs to be carefully selected to meet the needs of the site, and properly maintained and tested. This requires specialist knowledge of the principles of radiation detection and measurement and the equipment available in the marketplace. In addition to providing advice directly to Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL), there is also a requirement for DSRL, as the Site Licensee, to have an ‘Intelligent Customer’ capability that can review work undertaken on behalf of the DSRL by External contractors. This expertise resides within the Engineering Assurance, which is part of the Assurance Unit.
MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES
As the Radiation Measurement and Metrology Engineer in the Engineering Assurance Team you will provide authoritative professional advice on:
• Statutory and Regulatory compliance through the provision of specialist advice on the selection, maintenance, examination and testing of equipment used for the measurement and detection of radiation and radioactivity at Dounreay.
• Implementation of national and industry good practice in the maintenance, examination and testing of this equipment, leading to improvements in maintenance processes and delivery of maintenance and testing services.
• Reviewing the competence of personnel, both from within DSRL and from external contract companies supporting DSRL, to undertake the maintenance, examination and testing of this equipment on behalf of the Licensee.
• The establishment, where practical and appropriate, of a uniform approach to the maintenance of this equipment, both by DSRL personnel and Contract Companies, through the establishment and adoption of common standards and practices.
• Maintenance of a range of Framework agreements for the supply of instrumentation used for the detection and measurement of radiation and radioactivity at Dounreay.
You will also apply professional knowledge and experience to:
• Develop test protocols for all equipment used for the detection and measurement of radiation and radioactivity at Dounreay.
• Ensure that any person appointed as a qualified person for the examination and testing of this equipment has adequate knowledge and understanding of currently accepted testing standards and relevant technical guidance for the type of equipment they are testing.
• Ensure that the necessary tests are completed in conditions appropriate for the intended use and working environment of the equipment as specified by DSRL.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Qualification and/or relevant experience in a Science or Engineering Discipline.
• Membership of an appropriate professional institution.
SKILLS/ABILITIES
• Practical knowledge and experience of the selection, examination, maintenance and testing of equipment used for the detection and measurement of radiation and radioactivity. Previous experience as a qualified person would be a distinct advantage.
• Experience of the selection and interpretation of national and international standards (BSI, ISO and IEC) for construction and testing of equipment used for the detection and measurement of radiation and radioactivity.
• The ability to organise and undertake several complex tasks concurrently with minimum supervision.
• Excellent communication and presentational skills, both written and oral including the ability to produce ad hoc and standard reports.
• The ability to liaise/communicate with staff at various levels across the organisation to reach agreement on work standards, training standards and the application of national and industry good practice.
• Basic computer package user experience, including Word and Excel.
