Job Title: Radiological Personal Protective Equipment and Health Physics Support

Grade: Level 4/5

Salary Range: £24,809 - £44,436

Unit / Department: Radiological Protection Assurance, Assurance Services Unit

Reporting to: Radiological Protection Assurance Manager

This job has two primary roles:

Radiological PPE

To be DSRL ‘Intelligent Customer’ on radiological personal protective equipment (PPE) matters.

Through knowledge and stakeholder (Users, PPE Operations, Health Physics, Regulators, Site Management, Manufacturers and other nuclear site operators) interactions to identify and approve all forms of radiological PPE for use by Dounreay Site Restoration Limited (DSRL).

To work with suppliers to clearly specify the DSRL requirements for radiological PPE; Maintaining a focus on safety, cost, decommissioning programme impact and fitness for purpose.


Health Physics Support

To assist the Radiological Protection (RP) Assurance Manager in providing health physics services to the Dounreay Site, by specifying the quality and technical standards required of the health physics service.

To assist in monitoring the quality of the health physics services supplied under the RP Services contract.

To assist in ensuring that the correct level of Radiological Protection Monitoring (RPM) and Dosimetry Service resource is provided to the site.

MAIN ACCOUNTABILITIES:

• Ensuring that all radiological PPE used by DSRL is legally compliant, ‘fit for purpose’ to support the decommissioning work activities, by:

  • Regularly reviewing (with relevant stakeholders) and approving radiological PPE available to Customers.
  •  Documenting the radiological PPE that is approved for use by DSRL.
  •  Liaising with suppliers, professional bodies and other nuclear site operators on the development and use of radiological PPE.

• Providing, as DSRL’s senior advisor on radiological PPE, a first point of contact service on standards and use of radiological PPE.

• To provide assistance and support the RP Assurance Manager.

• Delegated Management responsibility, from the RP Assurance Manager, for interactions with and direction of the RP Services contract supplier and other suppliers of radiological protection services at Dounreay.

• To coordinate and conduct approval assessments for RPM personnel.

• Through spot checks and reviews, highlight areas for improvement to ensure that DSRL receive a fit for purpose and cost effective RPM Service.

• To co-ordinate the collection of feedback information of the reliability, accessibility and overall quality of the service received by site customers, from Health Physics services.

• To attend DSRL planning meetings so to assess the Health Physics Surveyor resource implications of forthcoming DSRL work.

• To co-ordinate the supply of RPM staff to meet project request work by the use of the Mainsaver work request system and other systems.

• To co-ordinate the generation of RP Services contract supplier’s booking codes to link with DSRL charge codes to ensure that DSRL project charges are correct.

• Review, update, and where necessary commission operating instructions so that DSRL supplies an up to date set of working methodologies for Health Physics services to adopt for any specific tasks DSRL requires to be undertaken.

• To be part of the team checking the quality of work undertaken and produced by Health Physics services, including reviews of reports, “on the job” assessments of monitoring staff’s knowledge and practices.

• To periodically visit, interact and collect feedback from RPM Service Supervisors on site regarding providing the service to the DSRL.

• To carry out periodic safety inspections of the RP Services contract supplier’s personnel occupied areas on site.

• To interact with the RP Services contract supplier’s Approved Dosimetry Service (ADS) to ensure that all DSRL equipment and services are maintained to enable the ADS to supply the dosimetry services required for the site. Equipment and systems involved includes site electronic personal dosemeter system, site personal air sampler system, whole body monitor, wound monitor and the air sample counting systems.


PERSON PROFILE

 
EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:

• Degree qualification in a scientific discipline or equivalent - Required.

• City and Guilds Stage I & II in Radiation Safety Practice, or equivalent - Desirable.


SKILLS/ABILITIES

• Demonstrable knowledge and experience of Radiological PPE.

• Health physics surveyor skills, knowledge and experience.

• Knowledge of the radiological hazards at Dounreay.

• Ability to communicate effectively with managers and others of different disciplines and seniority. This includes interactions with the NII, NDA, other external stakeholders and inter industry working groups.

• Ability to analyse numerical data in a logical and accurate manner.

• Basic computer package user experience, including Word and Excel.
