Emergency Arrangements
Emergency planning is an important part of the defence-in-depth approach to managing the radioactive and chemical hazards left over from the days of research and development at Dounreay.
The major hazards at Dounreay include liquid wastes in which radioactivity from reprocessed spent fuel was concentrated and the combustible metal coolants that were used in the reactor systems. The decommissioning programme is prioritised towards reducing or eliminating these major hazards at the earliest opportunity.
Guarding against the risk from these hazards involves multiple physical barriers, safety systems, high standards of training for personnel and well-rehearsed emergency arrangements. Safeguarding the workforce, the public and the environment is the over-riding priority.
Here you will find information about emergency planning at Dounreay and arrangements that would be activated in the event of an emergency.
