Scottish Resilience - Scottish Resilience is part of Scottish Government. It works with frontline organisations including the police, fire and rescue services, the Scottish Ambulance Service, local authorities and health boards, to prepare for and respond to all types of emergencies. Highlands and Islands Resilience - The Government's aim is to reduce the risk from emergencies so that people can go about their business freely and with confidence. This website exists to provide a resource for civil protection practitioners, supporting the work which goes on across the UK to improve emergency preparedness.


Highlands and Islands Strategic Co-ordinating Group - A multi agency group committed to making the Highlands and Islands of Scotland a safer place by ensuring that we and our partners can respond effectively when incidents do occur.


NHS Highland - NHS Highland has two principal roles - to improve the health and wellbeing of local people, and to provide healthcare services for people experiencing ill health.The area covered by NHS Highland comprises the largest and most sparsely populated part of the UK and represents approximately 41% of the land mass of Scotland.


Scottish Water - Scottish Water is the sole provider of water and waste water services to an area of 79,000 square kilometres (over 30,000 square miles), a third of the area of Britain.


Nuclear Emergency Planning Liaison Group

- The UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change chairs the Nuclear Emergency Planning Liaison Group (NEPLG), which brings together organisations with interests in off-site civil nuclear emergency planning. It is a forum for discussing common problems, exchanging information and experiences, and agreeing improvements in planning, procedures and organisation.


Health Protection Agency - Part of the Centre for Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards, the Radiation Protection Division carries out the Health Protection Agency’s work on ionising and non-ionising radiations. It undertakes research to advance knowledge about protection from the risks of these radiations; provides laboratory and technical services; runs training courses; provides expert information and has a significant advisory role in the UK.


International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) - The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the world´s centre of cooperation in the nuclear field. It was set up as the world´s "Atoms for Peace" organization in 1957 within the United Nations family. The Agency works with its Member States and multiple partners worldwide to promote safe, secure and peaceful nuclear technologies.


Northern Constabulary – the police force serving the Highlands and Islands and the lead organisation of the strategic co-ordinating centre used in the event of an emergency with off-site consequences.


Civil Nuclear Constabulary is a specialised armed force whose role is the protection of civil nuclear sites and nuclear materials, including Dounreay.


Highland Council - the local authority whose area includes Dounreay. It has a key role in both the emergency and recovery phases of an incident at the site.


Scottish Environment Protection Agency - SEPA is Scotland’s environmental regulator. Our main role is to protect and improve the environment.


Nuclear Installations Inspectorate of the Health and Safety Executive - HSE regulates the nuclear industry through its Nuclear Directorate. HSE’s strategic vision is to 'reduce the likelihood of low frequency, high impact catastrophic incidents while ensuring that Great Britain maintains its capabilities in those industries strategically important to the country’s economy and social infrastructure.'


Food Standards Agency Scotland - Our commitment is to improve food safety and standards in Scotland and protect the health of Scotland’s population in relation to food.


Scottish Government - Civil contingency planning is part of the everyday business of Government and public and private bodies. The purpose is to ensure that flexible plans are in place to deal effectively with any emergency, major or minor, foreseen or unforeseen. Incidents may differ in scale and impact - from events such as the Lockerbie bombing to more common problems such as flooding along river courses - but the basic principles of assessing risks, identifying preventive measures, preparing and testing plans, responding to emergencies and assisting a rapid return to normality remains valid whatever the type of incident. 


Euratom (The Euroopean Atomic Energy Community) - The Euratom Treaty establishing the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom) was initially created to coordinate the Member States' research programmes for the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The Euratom Treaty today helps to pool knowledge, infrastructure, and funding of nuclear energy. It ensures the security of atomic energy supply within the framework of a centralised monitoring system.
