RIFE reports
The Scottish Environment Protection Agency works with the Environment Agency, Northern Ireland Environment Agency and the Food Standards Agency on the radiological monitoring of food and the environment, and publishes the results.
The annual Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE) report provides an in-depth assessment of radioactivity in food and the environment in the UK and the public's exposure to radiation. The report focuses on key information that demonstrates both that food remains safe and that the public's exposure to ionising radiation is within legal limits.
The Food Standards Agency has overall responsibility for food safety throughout the UK. SEPA, the Environment Agency and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency are responsible for environmental protection and regulation in England and Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland respectively.
The report brings together the results of radiological monitoring carried out by each organisation, providing one overall detailed set of information and a UK-wide assessment of the total amount of radiation the public is exposed to at the 39 nuclear sites around the UK.
