Other mammals
Fox is common in the area and sightings have been made of a family along the cliffs to the north-east of the Dounreay site.
Droppings and pathways suggest regular use of the site, with animals probably entering via the Mill Lade and possibly under gated access points to hunt rabbits and ground-nesting birds.
Stoat and weasel have been sighted on the sandy embankments by Dounreay Castle, the burn and the grounds of the site.
Rabbits are ubiquitous within the Dounreay site and subject to periodic cull.
Brown hare is frequently observed in the fields around the site.
Other mammals observed by Dounreay staff include roe deer, occasionally red deer but on land away from the coast, hedgehog, voles and mice.
Offshore, dolphin, porpoise, minke whale, basking shark and killer whale are occasionally seen.
Seals are apparently rare along this section of coastline.
