Primula Scotica

The Scottish Primrose, Primula Scotica, is found only in the islands of Orkney and the northern area of Caithness and Sutherland.

It is easily distinguished from other primula by its bluish purple flowers. It flowers in May and often has a second flowering in July.

The plant is found at Dounreay on a coastal strip beyond the eastern perimeter of the site.

A survey identified approximately 2500 plants growing in an area zoned for development as a low-level waste facility.

In 2011, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd hired local field worker Karen Bell to translocate the plants approximately 100 metres further along the coast where other specimens are also found.

This area has been fenced off to provide a protected natural habitat for the primrose.
