Behavioural safety

Second Nature is the title of DSRL's behavioural safety programme, the ultimate aim of which is to make safe behaviour second nature.

An introductory session is included in the site induction process, which gives every person coming to work at Dounreay an awareness of the programme and how they can contribute.

Following consultation and development in conjunction with the union safety representatives on the site, it was introduced in April 2006 to assist in improving safety performance.

The programme aims to give personnel an understanding of the factors which may influence behaviour and how that understanding can be used to influence people to behave in a safe manner.

If consistently applied this should then lead to the formation of safe habits. Part of this understanding is an appreciation of how individual behaviour can impact on their own and other people's safety and influence other people's behaviour.

Second Nature also encourages personnel to intervene if they observe unsafe behaviour, practices or conditions and to learn good practices from other people.

Second Nature is captured in verse and issued as part of the training materials:

I could have saved a life that day
But I chose to look the other way
I shook my head and walked on by
He knew the risks as well as I
He took the chance, I closed my eyes
And with that act I let him die
If you see a risk that others take
That puts their health or life at stake
The question asked, or thing you say
Could help them live another day
