TYPICAL JOB DESCRIPTION – SAFETY CASE ENGINEER
Salary Range: £24,809 - £44,436

Reporting to: Safety Case Assurance/Production Team Leader
JOB PURPOSE:
To support the production of safety case documentation for facilities, decommissioning and engineering projects and to provide authoritative, professional safety and technical advice to project teams to enable informed and accurate decisions to be made and to support resolution of project issues all within the context of the Dounreay Site decommissioning programme.
The function of Safety Case Engineer is a key element in demonstrating that DSRL can satisfy the ‘Intelligent Customer’ aspects of NII Site Licence compliance. A consistently high level of professionalism and competence is therefore required in this raised profile function.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
The post holder shall:
1. Be accountable for the performance and delivery by self as a Safety Case Engineer and of any assigned staff or sub-contractors.
2. Be responsible for supporting the production of safety case documentation for facilities, decommissioning and engineering projects in accordance with current endorsed methodologies.
3. Support, undertake and manage preparation of Dounreay Modification Reports in accordance with due process.
4. Provide authoritative, professional safety and technical advice to project teams to enable informed and accurate decisions to be made and to support resolution of project issues within the context of the Dounreay Site decommissioning programme.
5. Within the context of overall project delivery, manage delivery of assigned tasks, including:
• Determination of the scope, deliverables, interfaces, dependencies and interactions
• Identification and delivery of specific milestones that must be achieved to complete the task
• Co-ordination with the project to define, build and mobilise an appropriate team to complete the task, identifying resource requirements for each stage of the task and agreeing these with the Project Manager.
• Leading and motivating any assigned staff through setting clear objectives/targets and performance standards, evaluating performance and taking appropriate remedial actions as necessary
• Maintaining the Health & Safety of any assigned resources working within defined operating environment.
• Monitoring task performance and progress, reporting anticipated variations and actions taken to resolve these
• Identification of issues out-with assigned authority or scope and provision of proposals to resolve these
6. Effectively and proactively manage internal and external stakeholder relations, ensuring clear and unambiguous understand on both sides regarding query resolution, non-conformances and delivery expectations. Key internal interfaces/stakeholders include:
• Peer reviewers
• Engineering Assurance and other Assurance teams
• Project teams
• Regulators (e.g. NII, SEPA, Highland Council, OCNS)
7. Take part in any post-project review as required.
8. Support and enable project delivery including, where appropriate, the coaching or mentoring project staff to ensure that they understand the standards to be achieved, monitoring project performance, and taking action as necessary to ensure that agreed standards are maintained.
9. Act and operate as an integral part of both the Engineering Assurance Team and the broader Assurance Unit through contribution of professional expertise as may be required in pursuance of Assurance Unit objectives and deliverables in support of the LTP at Dounreay.
10. Seek to develop and maintain professional knowledge and competence through consultation with and benchmarking against knowledgeable bodies in other areas of DSRL and external organisations to ensure that safety case process and delivery at Dounreay keeps up with modern practice.
11. Prepare such documentation, schedules, data and analysis as may be required in support of production, maintenance and reporting of the Dounreay Lifetime Plan.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Ideally educated to degree level in a relevant subject, or alternatively, to HNC/D level backed up by relevant experience.
BEHAVIOURAL STYLE:
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively both in writing and verbally are required.
