Heritage Collections

Dounreay's visitor centre, located within the old aerodrome control tower, was demolished in 2007 due to structural problems following water damage.  At the same time, the NDA and the UK Atomic Energy Authority gave a substantial financial contribution towards the design and construction of the Caithness Horizons museum located in Thurso's old town hall.

The collection of Dounreay artefacts was donated to Caithness Horizons and is now on display in the museum's dedicated Dounreay exhibition area.

The national importance of Dounreay has also been recognised and a mutual partnership arrangement has been set up between DSRL, the National Museum of Scotland and Caithness Horizons.

The national museum has recently purchased a unique uranium glass sculpture of Dounreay. It is on display in Edinburgh.
