DSRL activity
On behalf of the NDA, DSRL has provided practical support to a number of local initiatives including:
2010
Support to CNSRP activities:
- Part-funded with Highlands and Islands Enterprise the Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership programme manager post
- Support to develop the CNSRP programme
- Part-funded with the Highland Council a feasibility study of the options to improve transportation on the Berriedale Braes.
- Continued funding of Caithness Horizons
- Part-funded with HIE socio economic impact study to update the 2006 study.
Education & Upskilling
- Funding towards Chamber of Commerce’s Make the Right Connections project
- Part-funded with the Highland Council a two-year STEM project to ensure that science, technology, engineering and mathematic subjects are integral to the school curriculum
- Secondment of an assistant manager to the National Skills Academy, Nuclear (for the North of Scotland)
- Provided STEM ambassadors support for a number of educational events throughout the year
- Provided support for the North Highland College’s Engineering Skills Centre
- Funding to apprenticeship rotation programme
Support to Economic Diversification
- Part-funded with NDA a supply chain development programme to help diversify the local supply chain into new opportunities.
- Funded a feasibility study into a potential commercial opportunity
- Marketing our skills - developed an understanding of future skills needs within various business sectors, particularly energy
- Workforce transition - integration of socio economic activities with the human resources activities
2009
- Explored activities which may have the potential to become commercial entities. Support has been provided to develop business plans and investigate the process for activities to move from being a DSRL function to a commercial business.
- Part-funded with HIE the Caithness and North Sutherland Regeneration Partnership programme manager post
- Part-funded with HIE the project manager post for the Pentland Firth tidal energy project
- Release of staff to attend, on behalf of DSRL, transport infrastructure meetings
- Part-funded with HIE a feasibility study for Wick airport.
- Part-funded attendance at the All Energy Conference, Aberdeen
- Provided support and funding to assist Caithness Chamber of Commerce.
- Part-funded with HIE a secondment from DSRL to the National Skills Academy, Nuclear to undertake the post of regional manager for Scotland
- Sponsored eight full-time engineering students at the North Highland College to assist with living and travel expenses while continuing their advance level engineering studies.
- Provision of support from DSRL STEM (Science, Technical, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative.
- Seconded part-time a project manager to support the preparation of concept designs for the new Engineering Skills Centre at North Highland College.
2008

- Secondment of a co-ordinator to the North Highland Tourism Group
- Secondment of a manger to the North Highland Initiative
- Part-funding of a renewable energy development post at Ormlie Community Association Ltd
- Sponsorship of the Caithness Energy Alliance formed to develop opportunities in the energy sector
- Part-funding of a project team to develop the area’s potential in marine energy
- Secondment of a project manager to Wick Harbour Trust
- Sponsorship of Pulteneytown People’s project
- Funding for Caithness Horizons visitor and community facility in Thurso
- Proposed redevelopment of the former Dounreay Sports and Social Club site in Thurso under community ownership
- Support to organise the Caithness conference ‘Beyond Dounreay’.
