Funding
The NDA socio economic policy document sets out three methods by which it will deliver socio economic support to communities affected by nuclear decommissioning:
- Direct NDA funding
- Support through NDA operations
- Funding DSRL to deliver local socio economic support
Funding streams available for socio-economic projects are

DSRL Direct Funding
DSRL has an annual budget of £500,000 to undertake socio economic activities. A small amount of funding is available to external organisations for enabling activities which align to the area regeneration programme.

North Highland Regeneration Fund
Small businesses and young companies often find it difficult to raise money to fund growth. NDA established the North Highland Regeneration Fund to provide loan funding, complementing other existing sources of funding for small businesses.
This initiative is designed to pump-prime both the start-up of new ventures and the growth of existing businesses as part of the drive to replace the jobs that will be lost in the Caithness and Sutherland area as Dounreay is decommissioned.
Caithness and North Sutherland Fund
The Caithness and North Sutherland Fund was formed by the community to distribute funding from the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
A total of £4m is being paid into the fund by the NDA between 2011 and 2023 as part of its investment of £100 million in the clearance of low-level radioactive waste from the Dounreay site.
A board made up of community representatives is responsible for making grants, in accordance with an operating agreement signed with the NDA.

Community Project Funding
- Dounreay Communities Fund
Worth up to £50,000 a year. DSRL administers the Dounreay Communities Fund. DSRL's owners inject £2500 every time the workforce at Dounreay completes a month without a lost-time accident. Additional funding comes from the NDA.

- Dounreay Employees Charity Fund
This fund is financed by monthly payroll contributions by the workforce and is run by a small committee of staff from the site. The fund assists small projects and activities within Caithness & North Sutherland.
