Discharges to the environment

Liquids and gases generated during decommissioning which contain low levels of radioactivity are discharged to the sea or air under a formal authorisation granted by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

Samples are routinely taken from the environment and analysed to monitor the effect of our discharges on animals, vegetation and people.

The radioactive discharge figures for the site are published regularly:

Radioactive Discharges to air and marine environments June 2007 – May 2008

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency publishes an annual report on Radioactivity in Food and the Environment (RIFE).
